Peter J. Ketchum
Adoration of Sister Margaret Mary of the Bronx
THE ADORATION is a 36x 24 acrylic work on canvas. It uses found objects and photos, ink, photo oils and dyes.
Inspired by the fact that in the late 1980's people with AIDS had trouble getting medical care at a NYC Catholic hospital. Also a reaction to religious hypocrisy then and even more now with the endless abuse scandals. (Subtitle of this work is "In the Privacy of the Cardinal's Chapel.") In high school we had to paint huge backgrounds "copied" from famous works of art and then students performed tableaux in front of them. The background here is VERY loosely taken from a Renaissance painting and I apologize to the artist. The nun is from an 1880's cabinet card found in New Haven. The man (same one left and right) is from a late 19th century anatomy study sheet, copied, colored and cut out.
